Low-backlash planetary gearboxes position large, movable LED screens into changing formations – a fascinating interplay of technology and movement.

ScreenFLITE® —that's the name of the new and spectacular digital signage system from Simtec, which went into operation in summer 2018 in Terminal 3 of Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport. Low-backlash planetary gearboxes and servo actuators from WITTENSTEIN alpha move twelve large LED screens with high dynamics and positioning accuracy to constantly changing advertising spaces in various formats and formations.

The developer and manufacturer of the digital signage advertising system is Simtec Systems GmbH from Braunschweig. With ScreenFLITE®, the company is breaking new ground in the use of digital media content: While static LED or poster advertising achieves only low levels of awareness, moving advertising with electronic effects is an eye-catcher with significantly higher revenue potential.

ScreenFLITE® consists of three rotating rings that can be rotated together or against each other as desired. Four LED screens are mounted on each ring, which can be extended and retracted by scissor arms with a stroke of approximately 1,100 millimeters. The arms on the upper level can be tilted upwards, while those on the lower level can be tilted downwards. In addition, each display can be rotated independently around its vertical axis. How the screens ultimately move is a matter of programming by the content designer.

For the complex kinematics of ScreenFLITE®, Simtec relies on drive solutions with high power density, minimal backlash, and maximum rigidity. These properties enable precise positioning and dynamic motion sequences — even at high speeds and in confined spaces. The components used minimize vibrations and operate quietly, which is particularly important in applications close to the public, such as interactive displays.

> Thanks to the space-saving design of the gearboxes, they could be integrated perfectly into the tight installation spaces.

Simtec simulated nine motion cycles and used cymex® 5 for the design. The software selected suitable drives – efficient, safe, and ideal for future ScreenFLITE® projects in variable sizes.
